LifeOhm Book Club – The Book of Joy

2017-05-14 By Monica 4 Comments

The Book of JoyI’m starting a new monthly series here on LifeOhm where I can share some of my favorite books with you. This one, The Book of Joy, I actually read in January, but I loved it so much that I knew it had to be the first book I featured. I got this book as a Christmas gift (thanks Mom!) and am planning to gift this book to others.

The Book of Joy is the story about Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s trip to visit the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India to celebrate His Holiness’s eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others, and it truly is a gift.

Writer Douglas Abrams helped facilitate the dialogue and brought in some of his own research to support the concepts presented. The reader gets the benefit of the wisdom of these spiritual leaders, groundbreaking research on joy, and to witness the playful interaction between these sweet souls. 5 Steps to Changing the World Doing What You Love

2014-10-20 By Monica 11 Comments

"You change the world by being yourself." ~Yoko Ono

Sometimes people make light of the idea that each of us is a “special snowflake,” but guess what? It’s true. There is no one else exactly like you in the universe, and there’s no one else exactly like me either. We each have a unique way of doing things and a form of expression that no one else has.

This uniqueness provides each of us with a rare and priceless opportunity to provide a unique gift to the world. Even when we do work that is similar to others’, our presentation and expression is guaranteed to be different.

The Dagara tribe in Africa understands this concept well. The Dagara know that each person brings an irreplaceable contribution to the world, not just to their family and community. When a tribal elder dies,  it’s seen as the equivalent of a massive library burning to the ground. In death, the elder’s knowledge and gifts are lost to the world. [Read more…] about 5 Steps to Changing the World Doing What You Love

Love Advice from 4 of My Favorite Bloggers

2014-02-11 By Monica 4 Comments

Love yourself first and everything falls into line. ~ Lucille Ball Quote

Do you want to improve your loving relationships? Or perhaps meet that special someone this next year? Here is some thoughtful advice from four of my favorite personal development bloggers to help you find that true love.

Penelope TrunkFrom Penelope Trunk, author of PenelopeTrunk.com

“Love yourself first. There is no way to be a good parent, good spouse or good manager if you don’t love yourself first. Loving yourself is not an end-game, it’s a spectrum, and you never stop working on it. Also, you are always changing so accepting yourself is an ongoing process. Life is full of disappointments, and the biggest one is ourselves. It’s so hard to accept that. I am still trying. Every day.”

One Simple Way to Inspire Your Entire Year

2014-01-06 By Monica 2 Comments

"Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know more." Confucious

Whether you’re someone who makes New Year’s resolutions or someone who prefers to set goals throughout the year, one simple way to inspire yourself is to select a word that becomes your “name” for the year.

This tradition started thousands of years ago during a time of slavery in the holy land. When slaves or indentured servants were released from servitude, they were given a single white stone. On the white stone would be written a new name that they would assume now that they were free.

7 Ways You Can Help Change the World

2013-11-17 By Monica 2 Comments

"The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve all the world's problems." Gandhi Quote via @LifeOhm

I woke up at 4am, and all I could think was “What am I doing with my life?” I was in my early 30’s and living in the corporate world, working long hours with high levels of stress. I felt burned out and depleted. What happened? Growing up, I always dreamed I would change the world and make it a better place.

At that moment, I definitely didn’t feel like I was changing anything. I was just earning a paycheck. Just surviving. I didn’t have time to think about changing the world. I had deadlines to meet and never enough time for anything extra.

Does that sound familiar? Many people I know are in the same situation. How can you take on the problems of the world when there’s so much to do already? It can be overwhelming, no matter how good your intentions might be.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can change the world, just like you always thought you would. You can make a positive change. You can do meaningful deeds and make a positive impact on other people.
